- Summary
- Documentary on the thirteenth annual Prix de Lausanne competition, held in January 1985. Narrated by Pastori, the film traces the progress of entrants from the competition's preliminary rounds in Lausanne to the semi-finals, finals, and awards ceremony at Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. Personal insights into the competition are provided through interviews with founder Philippe Braunschweig; entrants Xavier Ferla, Sue Jin Kang, Marc Ribaud, and Domenico Levré; and juror Violette Verdy. The film includes glimpses of classes taught by Truman Finney and Carolyn Adams in Lausanne, and Stanley Williams at the School of American Ballet in New York. Among the entrants seen performing classical and free variations are: Ariane van de Vyver (variation from Le corsaire), Sue Jin Kang (Isabelle: the wonderful widow of 18 springs; chor: Dieter Ammann, mus: John Cage), Stefani Eckhoff (Die Moritat von Mackie Messer; chor: John Neumeier, mus: Kurt Weill), Greet Vinckier (variation from The sleeping beauty), Ben Huys (Don Giovanni; chor: Maurice Béjart, mus: Chopin), Xavier Ferla (variation from Giselle), and Edward Stierle (Far from over; chor: Stierle, mus: Frank Stallone). An excerpt from the awards ceremony shows the presentation of the gold medal to Stierle.
