Three-part video program on the modern dance technique developed by Phyllis Gutelius, based on her training with Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, José Limón, Antony Tudor, Elena Tchernishova, Sulamith Messerer, and others. Narrated by Gutelius and demonstrated by students of Het Nationale Ballet Akademie of Amsterdam. The first two sections of the program (disc 1) set forth the basic theories of the technique and serve as introduction and preparation to the student, while the third section (disc 2) presents a complete class.   1. CONTENTS: Disc 1: Off center: a step into modern dance (approx. 25 min.). Discussion of various principles of dance movement, the different parts of a class and their functions, and the use of imagery as a learning tool. Illustrated with classroom and performance excerpts. -- The Gutelius class: Definitions: How to do it and why (approx. 25 min.). Pointers to students on how to gain maximum benefit from the class. Gutelius gives a detailed analysis of the principles underlying the various exercises, and describes their purposes and the best way to execute them. -- Disc 2: The class, do it (approx. 99 min.). Instruction in the Gutelius technique, beginning with exercises at the barre (18 min.) and proceeding to floor work (25 min.) and standing center work (40 min.) continuing the center work with combinations and jumps (16 min.). Different levels of difficulty, from beginning to advanced, are depicted.
