Summary

Documentary about the IV USA International Ballet Competition (the 27th of a series rotating between the cities of Varna, Moscow, Helsinki, and Jackson), held in Jackson, Mississippi, in summer 1990. The documentary follows competitors and their coaches through the opening torch-lighting ceremony, various rounds of the competition, and the announcement of awards. In conclusion, the Grand Prix winner, José Manuel Carreño of Cuba, is seen at home in Cuba preparing for, and later performing in his debut with the English National Ballet in London. Among the coaches, teachers, journalists, and organizers who appear in interviews are: Patricia Stander, Tiiu Telp-Randviir, Anna-Marie Holmes, Ivan Nagy, Ben Stevenson, Laura Alonso, Jenny Veldhuis, Noburi Miyagi, Breda Pretnar, and Thalia Mara. Dancers appearing in interviews are: Jennifer Martin, Holly Williams, Ana Lobé, José Manuel Carreño, Yolonda Jordan, Lauren Anderson, Vladimir Malakhov, Martha Butler, Mark Arvin, and Pierre Quinn.
