Summary
Merce Cunningham discusses the recent revival of his work Septet by the Rambert Dance Company, made possible by a Digital Dance Award. He recalls its premiere in 1953 and notes some changes in his approach to choreography since then, especially in his deployment of music, stage space, and chance procedures. He contrasts the processes of creating stage and video works; recalls his collaboration with the composers Christian Wolff, Charlemagne Palestine, and others; and comments upon restaging his works for other companies and dancers. Among the works singled out for comment are Summerspace, Torse, Channels/Inserts, Points in space, Quartet, and Shards.
