Summary
Donald Fleming and Susan Blankensop, both of whom received Bessies for their achievements as performers, talk about their experiences as freelance dancers. Among the topics they discuss are finding opportunities to work with the choreographers of their choice, resolving scheduling conflicts when working with more than one choreographer, economic survival, the pressure upon dancers to choreograph, and the performer's contribution to the work. Blankensop discusses her work as a performer with Douglas Dunn and Dancers, and Fleming discusses his participation in the School of Hard Knocks. Blankensop is seen in performance in the video version of Dunn's Secret of the waterfall (created with Charles Atlas), Randy Warshaw's Fragile anchor, Bill Young's RoughSix, and Dunn's Elbow room. Fleming appears in duets with David Zambrano and in Sarah Skaggs's Fear of standing upright.
