Summary

Dancer/choreographers Yvonne Rainer and Sara Rudner discuss the achievements of the Judson Dance Theatre and Grand Union company. Rainer, a prime mover in both groups, recalls the influence of Robert Dunn's composition class; the innovations introduced by herself, Steve Paxton, and others (e.g., the rejection of traditional modes of dramatic presentation, the repudiation of traditional gender roles, and the use of nudity onstage); and the beginnings of Grand Union and its use of improvisation in performances. She and Rudner discuss her seminal work Trio A and her text Strategy for de-mystifying dance, which became the manifesto of the post-modern period. Rudner, a former member of Twyla Tharp's company, discusses the impact of these ideas and their influence on her own dance career. Rainer and Rudner are both seen in separate performances of Trio A.
