Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Guests are choreographer Marie Brooks, head of Marie Brooks Dance Theatre; Michel Boudon, a specialist in French and African music; and actress Colette Berge, who interprets for Boudon. They discuss the living traditions of African music and dance, along with their offshoots in the Caribbean and South America, and the importance of preserving this heritage in the U.S. today. Boudon describes the function of the griot, or oral historian, which Brooks compares to that of the calypsonian in Trinidad. Other topics include ritual dancing among the Pende of Zaire, the universality of dance, and drumming. Depicted in performance footage are Brooks and her company dancing outdoors, and numerous excerpts from the revue Africa Oyé!, including a Kanouri (Niger) instrumental piece, dances of the Pende and Batwa-Ekonda (Zaire), the Peul acrobats of Guinea, and Percussions de Guinée.
