Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Archivist David Vaughan, dance critic Don McDonagh, and producer Patsy Tarr analyze audience expectations of yesterday and today. They note audiences' preferences for the familiar rather than the experimental, the reliance on reviews for artistic validation, the general public's difficulty in articulating its responses to dance, the general lack of value for dance in American culture, and the need to educate children to appreciate dance. Looking back upon dancegoing in the 1950s, Vaughan describes the response to Merce Cunningham's Sixteen dances for soloist and company of three, which leads into a discussion of some special problems of modern dance in attracting audiences. Dance excerpts include Molissa Fenley in her Provenance unknown; Yuri Grigorovich's Nutcracker, performed by the Bolshoi Ballet; Elizabeth Streb's Log I and Little ease, the latter performed by Streb; and Wendy Perron's Don't tell us.
