- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Guests are Dennis Diamond, head of Video D Studios, and Elliot Caplan, film artist in residence with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. They discuss the use of film and video both as a means of documenting stage performances and as a creative medium (videodance or cinedance). Some of the topics they cover are dancers' changing attitudes towards film/video, the differences between the two media, stylistic preferences in shooting dance, the production and use of dance technique tapes, and building an audience for film/video dance. Caplan also describes his collaboration with Cunningham and points out some qualities of Cunningham's choreography that make it particularly congenial to film or video recording. His work with Cunningham is represented by excerpts from the recordings Changing steps, Points in space, Cunningham dance technique: Intermediate level, and Deli commedia, which includes comments about video by Cunningham. Diamond's work is represented by Show, a video made for a live performance by Senta Driver's company Harry; Finis Jhung's Basic ballet, volume 2; and Daniel Lewis's José Limón technique.
