- Summary
- Guests are Virginia Brooks, an independent film/video maker, and filmmaker Christian Blackwood, who heads Blackwood Productions. They talk about various aspects of making dance films and videos: gaining access to and establishing rapport with subjects, translating stage performances to film or video, obtaining financing for projects, and the function of film/video as a means of disseminating dance. Blackwood's work is represented by excerpts from his documentaries Tapdancin' (including footage of Bill Robinson, Maceo Anderson, and John Bubbles) and Nik and Murray (about Alwin Nikolais, Murray Louis, and their respective companies). He also discusses The American Ballet Company, his 1969 film about Eliot Feld. Brooks is represented by two films, respectively about the 1987 and 1988 recipients of the Mae L. Wien Awards presented at the School of American Ballet, and her recording of the school's 1988 workshop performance of Les sylphides. Appearing in these excerpts are Antonina Tumkovsky, Gretchen Patchell, Robert Lyon, and others.
