Improvisation: Dance improvisation around musical forms [videorecording]
Eye on dance ; 272
Guests are Livia Vanaver, who heads the dance company Vanaver Caravan; tap dancer Heather Cornell; and Richard Bull, director of the improvisational company Richard Bull Dance Theatre. They discuss the different functions of improvisation, drawing examples from their own experiences. Cornell is seen performing with Manhattan Tap, the company she co-directs, in Scrapple, Blues for Heather, and other works. Tap dancer Charles "Cookie" Cook is also seen in performance. Bull's work is represented by excerpts from Radio dances and Another Serenade (an alternative to Balanchine's Serenade), both of which he discusses, as well as Jesus' blood. Members of Vanaver Caravan are seen in a clog dance.
