Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Guests are Julie Malnig, an authority on exhibition ballroom dancing at the turn of the century, and Judie and Stan Martin, a husband-and-wife ballroom dancing team. They describe what exhibition ballroom dancing entails and discuss its development from the 1910s to the disco era, noting its roots and interchange with popular dance, its influence on fashion, and its changing characteristics over the decades, and its performing venues. The contributions of Irene and Vernon Castle are explored, particularly their popularization of the one-step and the Castle walk, and Irene's creation of a new female image. Also discussed are the origin of the foxtrot, often attributed to Harry Fox; the influence of the dance teams of François Szony and Nancy Claire, and Augie and Margo; the use of lifts in adagio dancing; and the introduction of Latin dancing at the Palladium and other clubs. The program is profusely illustrated with b&w and color footage of the dance team of Veloz and Yolanda, the Castles (from the film Whirl of life), Sandra Cameron and Bill Davies (from the film Partners), and others.
