Improvisation: Development and audience interaction [videorecording]
Eye on dance ; 271
Performance artist Robbie McCauley and Jim Niesen, artistic director of the Irondale Project, an experimental theater ensemble, discuss their use of and experiences with improvisation in performance, as a theatrical exercise, and as a means of developing new material. Niesen describes some theatrical games developed by Viola Spolin, the author of handbooks on improvisational theater. McCauley talks about the influence and expression of black culture in her work, and its political content. She is seen in improvisational performance excerpts, as are members of the Irondale Project and tap dancer Jackie Shue.
