Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Guests are Gus Solomons, Jr., a former member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company who now heads the Solomons Company/Dance, and Chuck Davis, director of the African-American Dance Ensemble. They discuss the effects of civil rights on black dance, and the problem of pigeonholing that confronts many black choreographers. Each talks about his work: Davis describes his attempts to preserve traditional African dance and present it to American audiences, and Solomons discusses his explorations of the postmodern aesthetic. They compare their uses of music, and correct some misconceptions about energy and technique in their respective dance forms. The African-American Dance Ensemble is seen in several performance excerpts, and Solomons and his company are seen performing Mythosaur and Aspen grove.
