Summary
Jane Dudley, Pearl Lang, and Ruth Currier look back upon their past work as dancers with the companies of Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, José Limón, and others. Some of the topics they cover are the advantages of using bare feet in modern dance, the crossover of modern and ballet, dances of social consciousness (Lang gives the example of Graham's American document), and gender roles in dance. They compare the ways in which Humphrey, Limón, and Graham worked on their choreography in the studio, focusing on Graham's creation of American document and Night journey. Dudley reminisces about learning the craft of choreography with Louis Horst. Dance excerpts include Shirah, choreographed and performed by Lang; The bird as prophet, choreographed by Dudley; and Limón's The exiles (b&w), performed by Limón and Currier, with voice-over narration by Currier.
