Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. Three noted teachers, Suki Schorer, Betty Jones, and Finis Jhung, discuss various aspects of dance training. They pay tribute to mentors who shaped their teaching style: Dr. Lulu Sweigard (Jones), Rosella Hightower (Jhung), and George Balanchine (Schorer). They also discuss the use of imagery, breath, and weight; constructive criticism; helping dancers cope with plateaux in their development; and the qualities of a great dancer. Recorded excerpts depict Schorer, Muriel Stuart, and other teachers in action at the School of American Ballet; and a performance of Napoli divertissements (choreography: Bournonville, staged by Robin Welch) by Chamber Ballet U.S.A., which Jhung directs. Jhung and two dancers give a brief demonstration of his teaching. In an untitled supplemental feature, Betty Jones discusses Doris Humphrey's concept of fall and rebound, and José Limón's use of isolations and the orchestration of movement.
