Summary
Guests are ballerina Maya Plisetskaya and Helen V. Atlas, former publisher/editor of Dance News, who interprets for her. This is the conclusion of an interview begun on: *MGZIC 9-3022 An encounter with Maya Plisetskaya, Part 2. Plisetskaya notes the different types of roles she has danced in the course of her career, singling out the title role of her own ballet Anna Karenina. She discusses her interest in acting and her desire to combine dance and drama, as she did in her film Fantasia (1975), based on Turgenev's short story Vernal floods. She reminisces about the beginning of her ballet studies, and talks about her own repertory at the Bolshoi Ballet, and expression through mime and port de bras. In recorded commentaries, dancer/choreographer John Clifford and dance historian Selma Jeanne Cohen discuss their impressions of Plisetskaya's dancing. Dance excerpts drawn from the film Plisetskaya dances (1964, b&w) depict the ballerina in the Black swan pas de deux, The dying swan, Romeo and Juliet, Walpurgis night, and The sleeping beauty; she is also seen in excerpts from Anna Karenina (1974, color).
