- Summary
- Dancers Tamara Geva and Sono Osato, interviewed separately, discuss their respective books, Split seconds and Distant dances. Geva recalls the beginnings of her career in Russia in the 1920s, when she participated in the choreographic experiments of George Balanchine and his Young Ballet. Among the works she describes are Enigma, influenced by the work of Goleizovsky; Marche funèbre; and a dance accompanied by Russian limericks. She briefly recalls her experiences in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, then discusses her career in musical theater, notably in the musical comedy On your toes, choreographed by Balanchine. Osato reminisces about her experiences in the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and describes working with Bronislava Nijinska on Les noces, with Léonide Massine, and with Antony Tudor on Pillar of fire. She also shares her first impressions of Martha Graham's dancing.
