Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
Ritual dances of Brazil and the Caribbean are discussed by Luis Bauzo, a musician; Jelon Vieira, the artistic director of Dance Brazil; and Molly Ahye, a choreographer and author from Trinidad-Tobago. Much of the discussion focuses on the orixa ceremonies derived from the Yoruba religion of West Africa. A performance excerpt depicts three gods of this pantheon, Omolu (god of disease), Oxum (goddess of the golden river), and Xango (god of thunder), played by members of Dance Brazil in choreography by Nem Brito. Bauzo demonstrates some musical instruments used in these ceremonies. The capoeira, a Brazilian martial art/dance, is discussed by Vieira; Ahye discusses the samba. The guests also touch upon socio-political comment in the samba, carnival dances, and calypso. Dance Brazil appears in excerpts of the capoeira and samba.
