Summary
Composer Anthony Davis and John Rockwell, music critic for the New York Times, talk about collaboration between composers and choreographers. Davis discusses, in particular, his scores for Molissa Fenley's Hemispheres and Laura Dean's Transformer, excerpts of which are seen at the end of the program. He notes how his work for dance has broadened the audience for his music and influenced the composition of his opera Malcolm X. Rockwell discusses critical coverage of and attitudes towards dance music, notes the special character of Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, and surveys some recent choreographer/composer collaborations in the U.S. and Europe. Esoterica balletica features a recording of Lucas Hoving teaching class, probably during the José Limón Dance Company's residency at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.
