Description
  1. 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., col.; 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. John Taras and Francisco Moncion, who began their dance careers in the 1930s and 40s, contrast past and present situations for dancers. They note the lack of employment opportunities in the early years, the predominantly European nature of the repertory, and, from a technical standpoint, the greater emphasis on weight and quality of gesture rather than footwork. They also talk about the role of the ballet master, the qualities that make a good performer (citing Diana Adams and Marjorie Moore as examples), and the change in expectations of today's dancers. Screened excerpts depict Paquita, danced by members of American Ballet Theatre led by Cynthia Gregory, and Dance Theatre of Harlem's Firebird, staged by Taras. In Esoterica balletica, William Starrett demonstrates some exercises dancers can do to keep themselves warm during slack periods in rehearsals.
