- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequence; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Hanya Holm, one of the founders of American modern dance, and Don Redlich, a dancer/choreographer who has worked with her for many years, look back upon their long association. They discuss Holm's special approach to teaching, which brought out her students' individual qualities; the choreographer's use of space and interaction with the audience; Holm's choreography for the musicals Kiss me Kate and The golden apple; and some of her groundbreaking achievements, such as the telecast of Metropolitan daily, the first modern dance to be televised, and the copyrighting of the dances for Kiss me Kate. Dance excerpts depict Redlich in his solo Harold II, and members of the Don Redlich Dance Company in Holm's Jocose and Ratatat, and Redlich's Lake of fire. Esoterica balletica features excerpts from Nancy Mason Hauser's film Hanya: Portrait of a dance pioneer, including footage of Holm and her student Valerie Bettis dancing in the 1930s.
