Description
1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (29 min.) : sd., col. with b&w sequences; 3/4 in.
Summary
Guests are Howard Johnson, a former Cotton Club dancer who is now a professor emeritus of sociology, and C. Scoby Strohman, a musician, dancer, and poet. In exploring the role of dance as a means of expression in the black community, they discuss the relationship of dance and music, which Strohman illustrates with an anecdote about the tap dancer Groundhog [Earl Basie], the cakewalk as a form of satire, the differences between black and white social dances and the influence of musician James "Europe" Reese on Vernon and Irene Castle, the derivation of the lindy hop, the creation of new dances at the Cotton Club, and competition in be bop dancing. Dance excerpts include b&w archival footage of the cakewalk, big apple, lindy hop, and jazz dancing. Strohman demonstrates the applejack and scat dancing in the style of Earl "Snake Hips" Tucker. In Esoterica balletica, Norma Jean Darden pays tribute to black women who popularized black dances: Ada Overton Walker (cakewalk), Elida Webb (Charleston), Fredi Washington (black bottom), and Katherine Dunham.
