Summary

Choreographers Martha Clarke and Senta Driver discuss some ways in which they have defied traditional expectations in their dance works: for instance, reversing traditional gender roles in lifting, or treating themes such as eroticism and aging. Specific works discussed include Clarke's Nocturne, seen in an excerpt from Joyce Chopra's film Martha Clarke: Light and dark, and Driver's Sudden death. An excerpt from Driver's Rough cut, a videodance created with Gary Halvorson, closes the program. In Esoterica balletica, Betty Low describes the tumultous premiere of Vaslav Nijinsky's The rite of spring.
