- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic, NTSC) (28 min.) : sd., b&w with col. sequence; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Dance critic Sally Sommer and Beate Gordon, director of the Performing Arts Dept. of the Asia Society, discuss different definitions of the term ethnic dance. Noting the lack of specialized knowledge on the part of many western reviewers, they propose some other approaches to ethnic dance open to responsible reviewers. In their exploration of the parameters of ethnic dance, Sommer suggests that tap dancing is the indigenous American form. In conclusion, Birju Maharaj is seen in a color excerpt of a Kathak dance from North India, with narration by Gordon.
