Inscribed beneath image: Fédération Française. Inscribed by hand in pencil: 14 Juillet 1790. Talleyrand.
Possibly the oath given by Talleyrand at the Fête de la Fedération, which reorganized the French church on a democratic basis. Officials on a podium are watched by spectators in an outdoor setting. Men in the crowd brandish swords and carry Revolutionary caps on poles.
