- Summary
- Panorama of hula performances, filmed on location in the state of Hawaii. Kumu hula (master teachers) from the different islands talk about various aspects of their art (movement, music, themes), its heritage, and its future; among them are Pua Kanahele, George Na'ope, John Kalimikaua, Nina Maxwell, and members of the Beamer family. The achievements of earlier dancers and teachers such as 'Iolani Luahine, Lokalia Montgomery, and Edith Kanaka'ole are remembered; a b&w film clip from Waikiki wedding (1937) shows a hula scene for which Louise Leiomalama Beamer served as dance adviser. Performing groups represented include: Keolalaulani Hālau 'Olapa O Laka (Aloha Dalire, kumu hula), Hālau O Kekuhi (Nalani Kanaka'ole and Pua Kanahele, kumu hula), Na Hula O La'i Kealoha (Elaine Kaopuiki, kumu hula), Hālau Hula O Kukuna O Ka Lā (John Kalimikaua, kumu hula), Pukalani Hula Hale (Nina Maxwell, kumu hula), Hālau O Nā Maoli Pua (Alicia K. Smith, kumu hula), Hālau Hula 'O Ma'iki (Coline Aiu Ferranti, kumu hula), Kuhai Hālau Kawaikapuokalani Pa 'Olapa Kahiko (Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt, kumu hula), and others.
