Summary
  1. Survey of different types of dance, beginning with a cross-cultural panorama of dance in the ancient world and in pre-literate cultures. A performance by Katherine Dunham's company demonstrates the adaptation of ethnic dance for the theater. Germany, Spain, Africa, India, Bali, Brazil and other countries are highlighted in a sampling of folk dances from around the world. A discussion of social dancing covers the waltz, tango, foxtrot, samba, mambo, and boogie-woogie. The remaining portion of the film emphasizes German and German-based dance. A section on dance instruction for children depicts the students of Tatjana Gsovsky, Lola Rogge, and others, and includes a brief dance-drama performed by children. The section on theatrical dance (ballet, modern, and mime) includes excerpts from: Alan Carter's Vier mal vier, performed by the Bavarian State Opera Ballet; Gsovsky's Hamlet; a ballet danced to Stravinsky's Histoire du soldat; a ballet to Debussy's Little suite, danced by the Paris Opéra Ballet; Kurt Jooss' The green table; and others. Some performers represented are: Natasha Trofimova in Carter's The miraculous mandarin; Melissa Hayden and John Kriza in William Dollar's The duel; Ludmilla Tcherina; Janine Charrat and George Skibine; Marcel Marceau in David and Goliath; Dore Hoyer in Dynamik; and Harald Kreutzberg in Hiob hadert mit Gott (Job quarrels with God). After a fleeting glimpse of Mary Wigman, students at her school are seen in brief dance studies.
