Summary

A former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Dorothy Bird Villard discusses the events that led to her career in dance. As a child, Ms. Villard participated in Sword and Greek dancing. After a chance encounter with Anna Pavlova, she went to study at the Cornish School in Seattle, Washington, where she met Martha Graham and Louis Horst. Ms. Villard describes Ms. Graham's command of the stage, her approach to the body and use of balance and rebound.
