Beginning with Lydia Thompson in 1869 the development of the genre is shown through the juxtaposition of still photographs, early film footage, and recreated sequences of six prominent women performed by present-day dancers. Cast for the recreated dance sequences: Julie Miller (as Lydia Thompson, ca. 1869), Christine Busini (as Little Egypt, ca. 1893), Cynthia S. Lee (as Carrie Finnell, ca. 1923), Janet Kinsman (as fan dancer Sally Rand, ca. 1933), Christina Kumi Kimball (as Josephine Baker, ca. 1925), and Deborah Bartlett (as Gypsy Rose Lee)
