Description
  1. 2 streaming video file (58 min.) : sound, black and white.
Summary
  1. Agnes De Mille explains her concept of choreography, tracing its development from primitive and ethnic sources to its place in theatrical dance. Briefly seen are several examples of ethnic dance, including a dance from the Congo (Charles Queenan) and a Scottish sword dance (James Jamieson). Theatrical dance is represented by brief excerpts from several ballets and a long sequence from Les Sylphides (Diana Adams, Sonia Arova and Frederic Franklin) including the girl's mazurka (Arova), the prelude (Adams), and the final ballabile. Examples of Miss De Mille's own choreography include excerpts from Rodeo (Jenny Workman and Frederic Franklin), Oklahoma (Farmer and Cowman, performed by Kelly Brown), and an untitled pas de deux to music by Trude Rittman (Sonia Arova and James Mitchell). An extended sequence shows Miss De Mille actually creating the choreography for a new work (Fall River legend) to music of Morton Gould.
