Oscar Brand speaks with Maria Meyers about his childhood in Brooklyn, New York and matriculating at Brooklyn College; (briefly) the Songwriters Hall of Fame [since 2010 within the Los Angeles Grammy Museum]; his wife and his son; his songwriting, in and for various genres; his limitations due to his having been self-taught; people with whom he has worked; shows on which he has worked including A joyful noise and The education of H*y*m*a*n K*a*p*l*a*n; working with Agnes de Mille; his television and radio shows; Phil Ochs [Brand sings an excerpt of Phil Ochs' song Love me, I'm a liberal]; Phil Ochs' memorial service; reasons he decided very early on to be a writer; his work as a psychologist in the United States Army during World War II; his return after his discharge from the Army to singing and songwriting; more on his time in the Army, at Fort Dix (N.J.) including his banjo playing; his transition to a six-string guitar; friends who helped educate him in music; some of his books including Songs of '76: a folk singer's history of the revolution (1972); [he sings an excerpt of a song based on a broadside, about loyalists who had left the United States in 1792]; he explains what a broadside is; more on the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
