Walter Terry speaks about the San Francisco Ballet and Michael Smuin, its director; the program Terry saw on July 28 including [John] McFall's Beethoven Quartets; Lew Christensen's Il distratto; and Michael Smuin's Songs of Mahler; the history of the company [this section of the recording ends at approximately 14:40 minutes]. Michael Smuin speaks with Terry about the renaissance of the company; the company's financial difficulties and how they were resolved; his night club act with Paula [Tracy] including his thoughts on ballet, vaudeville, and entertaining an audience; plans for future seasons; whether his background including the Mormon religion has influenced his work; dance companies and labor unions including the various unions at the company; the difficulty of making a profit [ends abruptly but continues on streaming audio file 2].
