Vincent Persichetti speaks with Katy Matheson about composing music for dance including his early experiences; Martha Graham including his first attempts to compose for her; his collaboration with Graham on her work Eye of anguish, for which he composed the score King Lear; Erick Hawkins as Lear; Graham's working methods; Persichetti's working methods; various aspects of the score's relationship with the choreography; the two premieres and rehearsals, including an anecdote about Hershy Kay; the dancers in the original production; Graham in her solo work Judith; his thoughts on improvisation; some of his favorite Graham dances; some of his works other choreographers have used; more on Eye of anguish including the critical reception of the work and Hawkins' role as Lear.
