Walter Terry speaks in general terms about modern dance and technique as an introduction to his interview with Myra Kinch; Kinch speaks about the basic purpose of modern dance; the torso as the source of movement and the use of breath rhythm in modern dance; the elements of modern dance including rhythm and dynamics; teaching students about the use of space; various aspects of the element of design; the relationship of music and movement in modern dance; the use of decor; pantomime as contrasted with gesture; classroom exercises; the value of studying composition; the non-standard movement vocabulary of modern dance; movement principles used in the various modern dance techniques including those of Hanya Holm, Martha Graham, and Doris Humphrey; the principle of resistance; the use of the torso; facial expressions; more on the torso as the center of movement.
