John Gruen speaks with Deanne Bergsma beginning with a description of her garden and her physical characteristics [short gap] and the purpose of the interview; Bergsma speaks about her early dance training in South Africa; her student years at the Royal Ballet School in London; some of her roles at the Royal Ballet and her thoughts when performing; her husband, Keith Grant; real life experience as essential to performing certain roles; performing in [Glen Tetley's] ballet Field figures including Rudolf Nureyev as a partner; the importance of mental strength, as exemplified by Margot Fonteyn; preparing, mentally and physically, for a performance of Swan lake; other roles including Queen of the Wilis and the Lilac Fairy; some of her partners in Swan lake; more on Nureyev as a partner; her thoughts on dancing modern works; more on Field figures [Gruen speaks about his daughter and her ballet training]; the average length of a ballerina's career; ballerinas and marriage including George Balanchine's thoughts on the subject (as related by Gruen); Margot Fonteyn's marriage; Bergsma's qualities as a dancer [ends abruptly].
