Summary
Streaming audio file (approximately 39 minutes). James Lyon introduces Margery Dell, associate press director, Edward Bigelow, assistant manager, and Todd Bolender, soloist and choreographer, all with the New York City Ballet; Margery Dell and Edward Bigelow discuss the current season of the New York City Ballet, including the [then yet to be titled] new works by George Balanchine: Episodes and Native dancers. Todd Bolender speaks about the forthcoming telecast of his ballet, Souvenirs; his experience at the [first] Festival of Two Worlds, in Spoleto (Italy); touring with Jerome Robbins' company, Ballets: U.S.A. including the tour's early termination; the limited repertoire of ballet typically offered to American audiences; differences between the New York City Ballet Company and European companies, in particular with regard to programing; the large number of works in repertory of the New York City Ballet; works to be performed during the last weeks of the current season. All participants discuss the problems of televising and filming ballets; Balanchine's revising of Act II of his ballet The nutcracker in connection with its filming for television; Balanchine's ballet, Seven deadly sins; the style and repertory of the New York City Ballet including costume design, with reference to Balanchine's ballets including Western symphony and Agon.
