Summary
SUMMARY: Walter Terry introduces Norman Walker, modern dancer, teacher, choreographer, and the topic: The differences and inter-relationships between ballet and modern dance today. Mr. Walker discusses how he became involved in choreographing modern dance works for ballet companies through his work with America Dances (Company); basic principles of ballet technique and of modern dance technique; problems of choreographing for ballet dancers; the ballets of Antony Tudor, particularly his Dark elegies, as an example of the influence of modern dance on ballet; changes in ballet choreography of the 20th century; the avant-garde preoccupation with "pure" movement; chance methods of choreography; themes which have inspired his dances.
