Summary
Streaming audio file (approximately 26 minutes). [Piano music accompanied by castanets.] WalterTerry introduces Carola Goya, an American dancer of Spanish dance. Carola Goya speaks with Terry about the changes since the 1920s in the attitude and knowledge of audiences in the United States with respect to Spanish dancing; her training in Seville, Spain; her early career including an anecdote about an offer to tour, in effect, as an introduction to La Argentina's upcoming tour; La Argentina's great success in the United States; how Goya's nationality as an United States citizen has affected attitudes toward her dancing; learning by imitation; her playing of the castanets with orchestras; the importance of studying the fundamentals of Spanish dance technique in the United States before training in Spain; studying in Spain as crucial to understanding the essence of the art; flamenco dancing including how it has become more outwardly flamboyant; La Argentina; Goya's tours with Matteo.
