Summary
Streaming audio file (approximately 25 minutes). Walter Terry introduces June Dunbar, teacher and assistant to Martha Hill, director of dance at the Juilliard School, and the subject of the interview: the architectural specifications for dance classrooms and stages. June Dunbar speaks with Walter Terry about the type of floor optimal for dance; the fixtures, dimensions, and ventilation optimal for dance studios and costume storage areas; researching, with Martha Hill, the specifications for the dance facilities for the Juilliard School's new building at Lincoln Center [for the Performing Arts] including visits to other theaters and studios; the features, and dimensions, of an ideal dance theater including (by way of illustration) the dimensional shortcomings of the stage at the Kaufmann Auditorium [Kaufmann Concert Hall], 92nd Street YMHA, New York City; the ideal theater in terms of audience sight lines; theaters-in-the-round as compared to proscenium stages for dance.
