  • "Part II. A collection of reproductions, gleaned from various antique Oriental and Occidental books, showing the process of making paper in China and Japan in years gone by. Also ... a number of original specimens of old Oriental papers": p. [27]-71.
  • Samples comprise 3 bark specimens (Japanese mulberry, gampi and mitsumata) and 7 sheets of Chinese paper, 8 of Japanese paper and 1 each of Burmese (Shan) and Persian paper (some folded). Papers chiefly made from bamboo (China), mulberry (Japan, China and Burma); China grass (Persia). Includes 9 leaves from printed books in Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan, 4 leaves from mss. in Japanese and 1 leaf from a ms. in Persian.
  • Illustrations: 2 mounted prints : wood engraving, b&w ; image 20 x 13 cm. on sheet 22 x 17 cm. and image 15 x 12 cm. on sheet 18 x 16 cm. By J.J. Lankes. Subject: mitsumata plant, printed on mitsumata bark paper; paper mulberry printed on paper mulberry bark paper made for this book in Shan, Burma. -- 5 photogravures (1 with 4 figs.) after photos. by the author.
  • Several of the remaining illustrations repeated and/or altered from various sources: 8 from Arts et métiers de la Chine (Paris, 1815); 6 from Kunisaki Jihei's Kamisuki chōhōki (Ōsaka, 1698); 5 from Sung Ying-Hsing's Tʼien kung kʼai wu (1698); and one each from Julien's Industries anciennes et modernes de l'empire chinois (Paris, 1869) and Blanchet's Essai sur l'histoire du papier (Paris, 1900).
  • Binding, publisher's, by Peter Franck, of beige half linen and decorative paper boards. One of about 150 copies bound; some copies issued unbound. Issued in slipcase.
