Summary
Preceding this speech by A. Philip Randolph on the labor movement is Brother Ragsdale leading the men in singing Hold the Fort. Randolph is introduced and speaks on the changing face of the labor movement and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. He states that laborers can no longer appeal to their employers' emotions for desired changes in working conditions, industry has become too impersonalized with its growth; only organization and unity will give workers the strength they need to fight for what they want. He then speaks about the Brotherhood's beginnings, the risks men took in organizing themselves, and how the Brotherhood has made our country a better place by improving working conditions for so many workers. Randolph continues by talking about the Brotherhood's development into a powerful union and that the fight must continue unrelentlessly in order for the proposals currently being presented to the Pullman Company to be accepted. He explains the actual process involved in this activity and states the only option is of striking if the proposals are not accepted.
