Summary
  • A meeting of the National Trade Union Committee for Racial Justice begins with an invocation by Reverend James Farmer followed by speaker, A. Philip Randolph. Randolph appoints the committee: Noah C. A. Walter, Anne Hawk, Harry Gray, William Bowle, Warren Bunn, L. J. Overton, Lucius Love, Priscilla Thompson, Sam Kauffman and Sally Glenn; and speaks about the free trade-union movement. He says this movement can only exist in a democratic society and discusses the history the trade-union movement, the Knights of Labor, the formation of the AFL under the leadership of Samuel Gompers; the monarchy of industry, businesses and associations; right-to-work laws and the restrictive legislature in the United States. He tells about the birth of the southern Jim Crow revolution, opposition groups, grandfather clauses, the poll tax, vagrancy laws, the union color bar, color castes and the amendments created to counteract these laws and to raise the status of Negroes. Randolph says we must call upon President Eisenhower to create legislation to protect all citizens, Black and White.
  • Ben McLaurin introduces Jerry Worth of the AFL who donates $500 to the National Trade Union Committee for Racial Justice. Noah C. A. Walter gives the report of the Credentials Committee and McLaurin introduces speakers of various panels.
