Summary
  • Ben McLaurin discusses the locomotive firemen's job status. He talks about the controversy over the necessity of locomotive firemen and tells of freight trains now operating without firemen and the reduction of firemen in the U. S. and Canada. McLaurin also discusses the importance of workers monitoring their financial affairs regarding their spouses and families, and encourages men to stay abreast the changes in laws affecting benefits. He then gives the report of the treasury.
  • A. Philip Randolph speaks about the possibility of the Pennsylvania Railroad taking over the parlor cars of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and the possible resulting job displacements. Randolph then discusses a new wage movement for a 20 cents per hour increase, time and a half pay over the expiration of the 205-hour month, and pay for holidays which fall on weekdays. The success of the health and welfare plan under Travelers Insurance is mentioned along with the announcement of the next convention in St. Louis. The growing hostility between the skilled Black worker and the White worker and the formation of discriminatory trade-unions by the White laborers is discussed. Randolph stresses that the main problem now is the lack of jobs.
  • A segment of a New York Division meeting is featured with the nominating of officers.
