Summary
  • At a meeting of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters concerning the industry's future, Ben McLaurin introduces Milton P. Webster, vice-president of the Brotherhood, and A. Philip Randolph, president, followed by an invocation by Brother Payne. In a speech directed towards the younger members, Webster talks about the importance of knowing the history of the Brotherhood and what it has done for its members and the work force. He warns that White men now are aiming to take over porters' and firemen's jobs and then introduces A. Philip Randolph.
  • A. Philip Randolph talks about rebuilding the spirit of the Brotherhood and mentions those such as Ashley L. Totten and Bennie Smith who were filled with the zeal and determination that built the Brotherhood. Randolph continues by talking about the railroad industry bieng in a state of decline because of competition from private automobiles, airplanes and buses, and the increasing need for members to stay committed to the organization in order to protect their cause. He says he has been trying to persuade the dining car workers and the red caps to join the Brotherhood and tells how the locomotive firemen, switchmen and brakemen benefited by joing. Randolph again warns of the impending drastic changes to the industry which will affect Black and White workers alike.
