- Summary
- The Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters hosts a Negro History Week program featuring music, poetry and notable speakers. After an introduction with music, Jean Blackwell Hutson speaks. As a librarian in New York City since 1936, a member of the NAACP, and the curator of the Schomburg Collection, she speaks on Negro history in the age of changing human relations. She refers to Carter G. Woodson, his teachings and his contributions to the Negro race, and summarizes the contributions Negroes have made to the world. The Brownstonians perform two musical selections followed by Langston Hughes who talks about the beauty of the American Negro woman and reads his poems Harlem Sweeties, Brotherly Love and I Too Sing America. He endorses the author Pauli Murray who speaks next. Ms. Murray talks about her new book, Proud Shoes, discusses its background and her's as a writer, then reads an excerpt from the book.
