- Summary
- At a regional conference of the Eastern and Detroit-Pittsburgh Zones of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, a few speakers briefly talk about Black women deserving more respect, Brotherhood members who need to attend meetings more regularly, and how the of porters' wives may benefit by staying committed to their husbands. Rosina Tucker, president of the Ladies Auxiliary advises women to strive to keep their children in school while she also reassures the Brotherhood of the Auxiliary's support. Ben McLaurin leads everyone in singing Hold the Fort and then talks about the Brotherhood taking over the Negro locomotive firemen and the White unions wanting their jobs. Milton P. Webster, the vice-chairman of the Provisional Committee for the Organization of Colored Locomotive Firemen, Brakemen and Switchmen, talks about his early days as vice-president of the International Railroad Men's Benevolent Industrial Organization during World War I whose cause was equal pay for Blacks and Whites and men and women. He continues with the Negro locomotive firemen joining the Brotherhood and the formation of the Provisional Committee which was used for organizing all the small locomotive firemen's unions into one larger and more powerful union. Webster also talks about his involvement in the March on Washington Committee and in getting the color clauses and non-promotability clauses withdrawn from the Southeastern Carriers Conference Agreement.
- Ben McLaurin mentions the possible problems of taking grievances to outside lawyers when the Brotherhood is represented by its own counsel. He then introduces Joe L. Rauh. Mr. Rauh explains the events which led up to the discharge of Ted Brown of the AFL-CIO and tells of his first association with the Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) and A. Philip Randolph. He expresses the need to get new and younger men on the railroad and continues with a discussion of the Kennedy Administration and its negative points. Some aspects of civil rights progress are mentioned and he emphasizes that it is up to citizens to push the politicians into getting what is wanted and needed. Last of all A. Philip Randolph reminds members that a trade-union must never become stagnant and that the Brotherhood must remain committed to civil rights.
