Summary
At this Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters 25th Anniversary Meeting, A. Philip Randolph welcomes all including Ralph Bunche of the United Nations; William Green, president of the AFL; and Frank Crosswaithe, chairman of the Negro Labor Committee of New York City. Randolph then discusses why America must cleanse itself of racial discrimination in order to give integrity, strength and vitality to her foreign relations and policy. He states that the Committee on Fair Employment Practice (FEPC) is the Brotherhood's gift to American democracy and advocates an emergency FEPC. Randolph speaks briefly about the union shop law, its purpose, the importance of supporting organized labor, and the difficulty in negotiating with the Pullman Company. Brother Julius Glass expresses his grievances with the Pullman Company and talks about the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen short-changing workers. A question of accepting their offer of agreeing to a permanent injunction which will protect the jobs of the colored locomotive firemen and end the court battles, or that of continuing the court battles and attempting to secure damages is discussed. Joseph Rauh, A. P. Randolph and Julius Glass refer to a particular [Clay] case.
