Summary
At the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters 31st Anniversary Meeting (Sept. 14, 1956, afternoon session), C. A. Johnson begins by reading the report from the Committee on Grievances and Claims. The Committee proposes that it become a permanent part of future convention agendas. A. L. Payne reads the report by the Train and Chair Car Porters that proposes working hours be cut to 40 hours a week, the railroad to pay for 1/2 of the cost of uniforms and other proposals. A. Philip Randolph comments on a move to reorganize the Ladies Auxiliary and M. P. Webster comments on the issue and expresses his respect for the Auxiliary. C. L. Dellums remarks on the idea to set up a trustee board for the Brotherhood; A. P. Randolph welcomes Dr. James Cooke, Director of the St. Louis YMCA, who speaks next and praises the Pullman porters for contributing a great deal to the Y's beginnings. E. D. Nixon refers to the Rosa Parks incident and talks about his ivolvement in organizing the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Nixon tells of the problems and difficulties opposers of the movement have created. He asks for help and support in the movement.
