Summary
The 31st Anniversary Meeting of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (September 10, 156), begins with Ashley L. Totten's report of the treasury for the period August 2, 1953 to July 31, 1956. Max Delson, the general consul, reviews the notable events, progress and achievements of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters since the previous convention. L. J. Shackelford reads the report of the Committee on Rules and H. E. Jones presents the report of the Committee on Credentials. Brother Davis gives an invocation followed by A. Philip Randolph who speaks briefly about and introduces George Leighty, president of the Order of Railway Telegraphers and chairman of the Railway Labor Executives' Association (RLEA). Leighty speaks next about the RLEA's objectives, the Railway Labor Retirement Act which he helped establish, the increase in workers' benefits, and about his goal of establishing a shorter work week. He pays tribute to A. Philip Randolph. Next, Randolph talks about the importance of achieving not only economic victories but political victories as well.
